The product that destroyed my skin

It is the Miracle Cleansing Oil from L'Oreal. "What happened?" you may ask yourself now. Well, let me tell you...

Two months ago I was looking for a new method of getting my make-up off, I was tired of using 6 cotton pads each night soaked in Micellaire Water. I heard a few beauty gurus rave about Cleansing Oils and decided to give them a try, but I didn't want to splurge on a high-end product just yet. I found this one from L'Oreal at Boots, very cheap (I think it was around the 7pounds mark) and it seemed to tick off all the boxes, so I bought it. Biiiiig mistake.

The problem with this one is that it contains Mineral Oil, an ingredient many brands use since it is cheap and often very effective. But it is such a low-quality ingredient that it can really damage your skin. It is known for leaving a residue on your skin and consequently clogging up your pores, which leads to breakouts and allergic reactions. That's exactly what happened to me and I'm still struggling with my skin.

I did not only get an allergic reaction on my face, but also on my hands, since I applied the Oil with my fingers and massaged it into my skin. It took me a while to realise what the cause for my bad skin was, and when I finally stopped using the Cleansing Oil, my skin immediately got better. But it's not quite as it used to be, and I know it will take a long time until my angry skin is soothed and in the same condition as it used to be.

I now use the Bodyshop Camomile Cleansing Oil, which is great and does NOT contain Mineral Oil. I can't recommend it enough, it works amazing for taking off your make-up quickly.

Just a little disclaimer on the end: This is what happened to me with this product and it doesn't mean this will happen to you as well. Every skin is different and yours might not react like mine to Mineral Oils. Just be aware of what can happen, it simply is a super cheap, low quality ingredient. Remember to always read the ingredient list of products you use on your skin, one mistake and you might struggle with your skin for a loong long time.

Did you experience something similar with another product? Have you tried this L'Oreal Cleansing Oil?

Have a nice day!
M.

  1. Oh, Miriam! I had the same thing a few years ago with a Laura Mercier cleansing oil (even the pricey brands use mineral oil sometimes) and it was horrific! Weird red bumps - that were not spots/acne - around my eyes and cheeks... I'm so sorry you went through it too! (Sensitive skin club? Shall we start one?) I haven't yet tried The Body Shop cleansing oil, I'm hooked on Emma Hardie :)
